This was a bit of an experimental night, and it all looked very quiet early on, Brownie got there early so had a quick spin round the 0.99 mile race course, showing good power to set the bar at 2.22 before heading off for the regular valley loop with the regulars.
While they were away Eileen and mountainbikers Ron and Jack moved the pace up a touch and set the best at 2.14 but there was no real sweat around at that point. Challenge takers seemed hard to find, it was like a PE lesson at school with everyone forgetting there kit and reluctant to make an exhibition of themselves.
Up stepped the man of carbon, stripped and ready for action. Now Jack had paced Ron, showing the slipstream effect the simulation had and nipped out for the sprint win. Bob showed he was going alone from the flag and powered away but he was yet to experience the full effect of the finishing hill. The I magic simulates the climb and the effect of a slight headwind at that point to good effect, Bob died and just hung on from the chasing riders to set a new 2.12 record, and win the Gurning competition in style.
Ron stepped up again, and with the bike in top gear all the way flexing like a visa card on meltdown blasted at full power for the whole ride to trip the clock at 2.01, blooming ell were we just playing before then.
The Gloves were of then as a series of challengers tried desperately to use Rons slipstream to have a chance of beating that impressive time, but to no avail. All credit to Tony for giving it a good go in jeans and shoes while Slapper was the first to go close with some impressive power up the hill but weakened from the valley lap fell short.
Carbon Bob had one last effort as the night struck 10pm and looked good pacing Slappers run, but could not make it count in the sprint and had to settle for 3rd much to Chris’s delight.
Ron finished off the night showing everyone it was no fluke by laying down another 2.01 beating his other ride on the line as the last run of the night.
Good skills from Troy, a potential new Rocko member, for initially puncturing on a turbo, and for melting the tyre in the process of trying to keep up as the tyre slipped. When he got another go he managed an impressive time for a beginner, and some superb power readings up the hill that had a few competitors sizing up those monster calves.
Next time we need some more of the big hitters to show us how its done, should be red hot.
There’s some video of Ron in action here, and thanks to troy fro the loan of his bike as my seat post refused to budge for action.
